RATH & Man-made underground passage: BIG FORT in Magheramayo

RATH & Man-made underground passage: BIG FORT

What is recorded here

Big Fort in Magheramayo is a man-made underground passage beside a rath, preserved as a scheduled site in County Down. The passage may have let people move through rain, darkness or danger without exposing themselves above the ground. Such a hidden route would have felt like a gift from the earth, and perhaps it still smells of that old practical wonder.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as RATH & Man-made underground passage: BIG FORT. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
