RATH in Motalee, County Derry, is a recorded archaeological site from the early Christian period. A rath is an ancient earthwork, often a circular bank and ditch marking a home, a refuge or a boundary lived around for generations. The name survives without a house in sight, which is not emptiness but delay: the land keeps its shape while people forget the story that made the shape.
