RATH in Ballynamullan

Mortars and castles, and in the old world of Ballynamullan, the rath was the common sense of life. A rath is a ring of earth and stone, built to hold a household against rain, theft and forgetting. It may have held a hall, a byre and a garden, with people moving through its gate since before written memory. The name still points to that shape, and the shape still answers the name.
