Rackheath House

Semi-detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1885. Comprising attic accommodation with dormers, gabled end bay to west having full-height bay window, single-bay two-storey entrance block and conservatory to north. Pitched slate roofs with bargeboards, cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystacks. Half-hipped slate roof to entrance block. Rendered walls having plinth course. Moulded render cornice having keystone, string course and ornate plaque to bay window. Camber-headed openings to dormers, west elevation, with replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed openings to dormers, east elevation, some having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, some with replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed openings to west elevation having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows with continuous render sill course to first floor and limestone sills to ground floor. Render architraves over ground floor windows to west elevation. Round-headed opening to east elevation having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash window. Square-headed opening to entrance block, east elevation, having stained glass overlight and timber panelled door with stained glass panels. Square-headed opening to bay window, west elevation, having overlight and half-glazed timber panelled double-leaf doors with rendered steps. Rendered walls to east yard.

Built to accommodate officers of the British Navy, the asymmetrical layout of this house with gabled breakfronts and canted bays are characteristic features of many middle sized houses built in Ireland during the later Victorian period. The entrance with stained glass overlight and half-glazed door adds artistic interest and is a notable feature of the house. It forms part of a notable group of four.
