Quarry, Old Castle Down cut stone through the Medieval and Post Medieval periods, sustaining lives that depended on heavy lifting and patient judgement. Men and women may have measured depth, listened for cracks, and carried weight home before dusk. The rocks gave up material for buildings, roads, or domestic pride. What was taken is gone, but the shape of the work remains visible in the land.
