Promontory fort called Castlesteads on the east bank of the Irwell 550m SSE of Banks Farm

Castlesteads is a promontory fort on the east bank of the Irwell, recorded as a scheduled monument near Banks Farm. It is a place where the land itself was shaped to watch, defend or contain, though no surviving name explains who stood there when the river ran past. The water may have carried life away or brought people in, and the earth may have held tools, bones or forgotten warnings. What remains is a boundary made visible, a line drawn before human memory could forget it.
