PREMONSTRATENSIAN ABBEY: WOODBURN ABBEY in Carrickfergus

PREMONSTRATENSIAN ABBEY: WOODBURN ABBEY

What is recorded here

Woodburn Abbey stood in County Antrim during the twelfth century as a Premonstratensian house, sending the smell of incense and the sound of chant across the land. Monks may have walked barefoot through marsh water at dawn, their shadows stretching long over wet grass while they prayed for kings and peasants alike. The abbey no longer shows towers or halls, but the ground still holds the shape of that discipline, waiting for someone to listen before speaking.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as PREMONSTRATENSIAN ABBEY: WOODBURN ABBEY. Recorded period: C12TH. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
