Christchurch began as Twynham, a place between two streams where canons, monks and castle builders kept one another company for centuries. Richard de Redvers raised his motte and bailey to watch the priory, while Baldwin de Redvers gave the Augustinians a house that turned the trading town into a regional power. Henry VIII handed the church to the parish in 1540, but the priory wall, Place Mill and castle mound still mark the boundary where faith, trade and force collided.
