Powis castle gardens layer Italianate terraces, an English landscape park and Edwardian borders on a red sandstone ridge above Powys. William Winde began cutting the steep ridge in the early 1680s, Adrian Duval helped shape the Baroque terraces after 1703, William Emes added the Wilderness and drive by the 1770s, and Violet, Countess of Powis replanted the terraces as vivid perennial borders. The result is not a single finished idea but a argument between ages, with stone, water, lawn and flower all competing for the same view.
