Lamont's Castle Yard in Port Glasgow built ships through the nineteenth century, filling Inverclyde air with hammer strikes and tar. The yard turned local hands into a machine for the sea, producing vessels that carried trade and people beyond the coast. Its exact boundary has faded, but the function remains clear: human muscle and iron became shipwork.
