Hotspur’s ransom money bought the stones that raised Polnoon Castle beside the Polnoon Water in the fourteenth century. Sir John Montgomery captured the English knight at Otterburn, treated him with courtesy, and turned the payment into a tower for Eaglesham. The Montgomerys held the place until the seventeenth century, while rubble and memory remained beside Polnoon Farm.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Polnoon Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
