Plean Castle stands one mile from Plean as a rebuilt tower and manor house, not a forgotten ruin. The old tower dates to the fifteenth century, the adjoining manor to about 1528, and the present building was completed from those surviving parts between 1991 and 1997. Its painted beams, large fireplace and vaulted basement still give the place the feel of a home rather than a museum, as if the castle had merely waited for someone to stop abandoning it.
