PIT BURIAL in Ballymagowan

PIT BURIAL

What is recorded here

Mud and marrow met in a narrow hole before roads or kings existed. The dead dropped into earth without coffins, trusting pressure and time to hold what flesh had lost. That much is fact. Whether love, fear or hunger guided the hand cannot be known.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as PIT BURIAL. Recorded period: PREHISTORIC; BRONZE AGE. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Pit burial; Bronze Age. This type of burial typically contains inhumations and is significant for understanding early funerary practices and social structures in prehistoric Northern Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
