Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Pikethaw Hill as Boundary Cairn (19th Century), Cairn (bronze Age), Shelter (19th Century) - (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Bronze Age cairn, later reused or modified in the 19th century. Its significance lies in its long history of use, reflecting both prehistoric funerary practices and later boundary or commemorative functions.
