Phoenix Park

Detached two-bay single-storey over basement red brick toilet block, built c.1895. Pitched terracotta pantile roof with terracotta ridge tiles and moulded cast-iron guttering to timber box fascia on overhanging timber sheeted eaves with cast-iron downpipes. Decorative moulded timber bargeboard to both gables with flat-panelled timber gables having louvred vents to apex and diminutive corbelled timber courses. Red brick walls laid in English garden wall bond with lime pointing and projecting plinth course below sill level with moulded brick trim. Square-headed window openings with chamfered sills and timber casement windows with top-hung over-light. Two square-headed door openings to north elevation with replacement timber sheeted doors. East and south elevations drop to basement level behind steel fenced perimeter of zoo site.

A modest-scaled public toilet block exhibiting fashionable architectural devices of the turn of the twentieth century. The subtle detailing to the gables adds a decorative element to an otherwise utilitarian building that continues to serve its original function. It forms part of an interesting group of related structures in the park.
