This blue commemorative plaque records: Percy Toplis known as the Monocled Mutineer, shot and killed here whilst on the run for murder 6th June 1920 Recorded plaque organisation: Penrith Civic Society.
Percy Toplis was a British soldier who gained notoriety as the "Monocled Mutineer" after deserting during World War I and later being shot dead while evading murder charges.
