What is recorded here

Penyard Castle is a scheduled monument in Herefordshire where a fourteenth-century undercroft still holds chamfered stone responds beside a seventeenth-century house. The Talbots controlled this wooded chokepoint from the thirteenth century, using its narrow passage toward Monmouth and Pembroke for hunting, trade and defence. A lost mint, a scarped terrace and buried walls suggest that ordinary people once moved through this place as much as soldiers did.
The National Heritage List for England records Penyard Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Penyard Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Lacy family, a prominent Norman noble house. It is remembered as an important medieval stronghold and is now protected as a scheduled monument due to its historical and archaeological significance.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
