This stone commemorative plaque records: This howse was founded by Mr John Penrose, marchant, sometime maior of this towne. Ano Do 1627
Mayor John Penrose, a merchant and former mayor of the town, established the Penrose Almshouses in 1627 to provide housing for the poor, reflecting his civic leadership and philanthropic efforts during the early 17th century.
