What is recorded here

Penlle'r Castell is a ruined medieval castle on the summit of Mynydd y Gwair in Swansea, built probably in the late 13th century as a military watchpost for the Marcher Lords. Standing 1213 feet above sea level, it commanded the ridge route into northern Gower and could have warned Swansea of raids from the lords of Is Cennan. Only deep ditches, earthen banks and fragments of dry-stone walls remain, but the shape still suggests two towers perched where the mountain meets the sky.
The National Monuments Record of Wales records Penlle'r Castell as Castle from the Medieval period. The saved point comes from the official national record. Inclusion does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
