Linked to St Colman Mac Duagh, an early Irish monastic saint associated with Keelhilla and the surrounding ecclesiastical site, the penitential station reflects a tradition of pilgrimage and penance common in early Christian Ireland. Such stations were often used by pilgrims as waypoints during visits to holy sites, involving prayer, fasting, or physical acts of devotion.
