No king’s banner ever flew above Penhow Castle, yet it has stood in Newport since the early 12th century and still belongs to the people living inside it. That is the strange part: a castle is usually dead, turned into a museum or a ruin, but this one kept breathing through every century. Rooms were cut, walls thickened, staircases invented and gardens rearranged until defence became domesticity. The building did not preserve history so much as keep doing it, one household at a time.

Penhow Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Penhow family, a prominent Welsh noble lineage. It is remembered for its strategic position overlooking the River Usk and its role in the defense of the Welsh Marches during the medieval period.
