Castledykes and Loudoun Hill may have joined Peebles and Irvine under a Roman road, though the final link still wears a question mark. If that chain is true, wheeled traffic and marching boots crossed South Lanarkshire long before modern lanes gave the area its shape. The hill and dyke would have marked the route, while ordinary people watched carts, soldiers or traders pass through scenery they now call home.
