Why this matters
Linked to Saint Patrick, the well is traditionally associated with penitential practices and pilgrimage, common at such sites in early Christian Ireland. The surrounding cairn and drystone enclosure suggest a long history of veneration, possibly combining pre-Christian and Christian ritual elements.
What is recorded here
Situated in lowlying, wet ground. Spring well at an indentation at the W of a substantial kidney-shaped cairn/penitantial station (SL016-005002-). The well is enclosed within a drystone border and covered with a low arch also of drystone construction. It is partially covered by cairn material.
