Park pale and associated remains at Castle Hill

Castle Hill Deer Park in Filleigh, North Devon, is a scheduled monument preserving the earthworks of a medieval enclosure that held hundreds of fallow deer. The surviving pale forms a rough oval eighty metres across, marked by a clay-lined ditch, a low bank and a D-shaped platform on Deer Park Hill. Westcote mentioned the park in 1630, and later maps show it extending toward South Molton. The boundary still cuts through the landscape like a forgotten ribbon, separating private memory from public land.
