Orchardton Castle stands on the Solway Coast in Dumfries and Galloway, built between 1878 and 1883 for William Douglas Robinson-Douglas after an earlier house collapsed under the weight of its own making. Its Scottish Baronial towers rise above a private beach, botanic gardens and woodland, while three grand staircases and a central lift carry visitors through forty-five rooms, twenty bedrooms and more than thirty fireplaces. The building has served as a military hospital, hotel, school and artist residence, and it still offers a rare chance to touch the restless life of the coast.
