Ongar Castle, Essex is a castle, fort or tower in Epping Forest, England. Perhaps the forest swallowed the stones while men slept, leaving only a shadow in the moss. Maybe the castle still stands, waiting for someone foolish enough to stop pretending it is gone.

Ongar Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Vere family, Earls of Oxford, and later held by the Crown. It is remembered as a strategic royal fortress and for its role in the suppression of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt.
