At midnight on 11 August 1970, a hidden bomb under a car killed two Royal Ulster Constabulary officers near Crossmaglen. They were the first police officers lost to republicans in the whole conflict and the first security guards killed in South Armagh. The quiet border darkness broke open that instant, marking the place as a frontline before most people even named it.
