Old Dalquharran Castle is a ruined fifteenth-century tower in South Ayrshire, extended into an L-shaped house with vaulted basement, crenellated parapet and gardens before it was abandoned in the eighteenth century. Its round corner tower still stands beside the riverside path, while the old rooms have become a dangerous drinking den for locals who go there after dark. The castle may have served as a proud family seat, a noisy tavern or both, but its stones still hold the shape of every use they suffered.
