Old Castle of Kilwhinan

Tower House (medieval)(possible)

What is recorded here

No wall, room or gate still shows at Kilwhinan. The old survey named a castle there, and a later writer repeated a story about a Cromwellian fort nearby. The mountain may have taken the stones back, or the name may have moved from one hilltop to another. What is certain is that the place still belongs to the region, even when the region no longer shows it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Old Castle of Kilwhinan as Tower House (medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
