Old Bishop's Palace rose beside the Llandaff cathedral in the late thirteenth century, its angular walls and twin towers dominating the river Taff ferry route. Bishops lived there until the fifteenth century, then Mathew families of Radyr took it over, renovated it, and used it as a refuge during a local feud in 1596. After debts, emigration and sale, the castle slid into ruin by the eighteenth century, leaving behind a forgotten quadrilateral where religious power, family ambition and ordinary survival kept colliding.
