You can still touch the sharp edges of that name in Waterford, where John Windele pulled the stone from a cathedral wall to reveal NACI MAQI carved in ancient marks. The fragment measures less than a metre, yet it carries a whole lineage into the world. Ardmore kept three such stones, including one beside a grave and another set into an oratory wall, as if the town had swallowed its own memory and waited for someone strong enough to listen.

This ogham stone was found built into a low wall in the cathedral at Ardmore, Co. Waterford, by John Windele (FitzGerald 1854-5, 230-1; see WA040-008006-). The stone, which is broken at both ends, measures 0.86m x 0.30m x 0.05m (converted from Macalister 1945, 260, no. 264). The inscription reads ...]NACI MAQI [... (Macalister, ibid). A second ogham stone (WA040-008005-), found built into the E wall of St Declan’s Oratory and a third (cross-inscribed) ogham stone (WA040-008007-), found beside a grave, are both on display in the cathedral.
