One of two stones broken during ringfort clearance at Dunbell Big in the 1850s still marks the place where the violence happened. The farmer treated ancient witness as rubble, yet the recovered fragments carried an inscription naming Navallo and a parent. That much survives the breaking. The stone sits in County Dublin now, displaced from Kilkenny, but the mark of what was done to it remains written in its shape.

This is the present location of one of two stones from Dunbell Big, Co. Kilkenny (KK024-01003-; KK024-01004-). Macalister (1945, 34-5) records that in the 1850s a farmer was clearing a group of ringforts off his land at Dunbell. In the course of these operations two ogham stones were uncovered and broken up to get them out of the way. The pieces were recovered and are now in the National Museum of Ireland. This stone measured ‘6 feet 0 inches x 1 foot 0 inches x 0 foot 11 inches’ and was inscribed on one angle. The inscription was read by Macalister as: NAVALLO AVVI GENITTAC[. . . ].
