Ogham stone (present location) in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

This stone was discovered in 1970 on the townland border between Shankill, Co. Kilkenny and Wells, Co. Carlow (see KK016-013----). It was presented to the museum at Rothe House where it is on display (Old Kilkenny Review 1969, 101). It is a remarkably small stone (H c. 0.57m; Wth 0.14m at its widest point; T 0.055m). It is mounted on a wooden base in such a way as to obscure the final consonant on the first angle of the inscription. The inscription is on three angles reading downwards as follows: left angle MAQI CUNALIG. . . ; right front angle MAQI; right rear angle MUCOI COSCIS/N. The size of the stone has led McManus (1991, 75-6) to suggest that 'one might entertain some doubt as to its antiquity.' Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 17 January 2013
