Ogham stone (present location) in Cork City

Ogham stone (present location)

What is recorded here

Broken from a larger stone and buried in a dark passage at Ballyknock North, the slate fragment still carries the name Lamadilicc mac Maic Brocc across its edge and top. It has travelled from that hidden ringfort to the Stone Corridor at University College Cork, where light finally touches the chiselled marks. The stone refuses to disappear completely. It keeps a personal name alive long after the hand that cut it has forgotten the shape of its own tools.
One of 15 ogham stones found in a Man-made underground passage (CO055-007003-) in a ringfort (CO055-007001-) at Ballyknock North, Co Cork (see CO055-007005-) and currently on permanent display in the Stone Corridor, University College Cork. Recorded as a slate stone (H 2ft 8in; 1ft 8in x 6in), broken from the upper end of larger stone. The inscription was chiselled on the dexter edge and top of the stone. Macalister's final reading (1945, 86, no. 83) is LAMADILICCI MAC MAIC BROCC. McManus (2004, 18, no. 14.) could only be certain of L[A]MaDULICCi MAC[]CBROC but this pre-dates conservation work on the collection in 2009. An inspection of the stone in 2016 confirmed Macalister's reading with MAC MAIC. (Power et al. 1994, no. 4215) Compiled by: Nora White Date of upload: 5 February 2016
