Ogham stone (present location) in Cork City

Ogham stone (present location)

What is recorded here

An ogham stone from Aghabulloge graveyard in Cork City, broken free when an 18th century Church of Ireland parish church fell in 1838. Its marks are damaged enough that scholars still argue over whether they name a person, a place or nothing at all. The stone survived the destruction of the building that hid it, carrying a voice older than the church into the present day.
This is the present location of an ogham stone (CO061-080007-) discovered in 1838 during the demolition of an 18th century Church of Ireland parish church in Aghabulloge graveyard (CO061-080002-). It is one of two ogham stones from the site, the second (CO061-080005-) remains in situ. This stone is in a damaged condition but was read by Macalister (1945, 105-6, no. 105) as ANM NETACUNAS CELI VIDETTAS; McManus (1991, 95; 2004, 21, no. 23) considered the first two words 'a rash reconstruction', whilst Power (1932, 21) was of the opinion that it was 'useless speculating as to the original inscription'. (Power et al. 1997, no. 7960) Compiled by: Nora White Date of upload: 8 March 2016
