Óengus of Tallaght

Óengus of Tallaght was a 9th-century Irish bishop and writer who composed the earliest metrical martyrology in the vernacular, recording saints and feast days in 365 quatrains. He belonged to the community founded by Máel Ruain at Tallaght, where he served as a cleric and later bishop. A later account claims he was born in Clonenagh, County Laois, and buried there, though the Martyrology itself gives no such importance to that place. His work survives in at least ten manuscripts, the earliest from the early 15th century, and remains a foundational record of Irish sanctity.
