This black commemorative plaque records: Oakham Castle Hall circa A.D. 1190. One of the finest examples of secular architecture of the period in England. An old custom decrees that ever Peer setting foot in the town must present a horseshoe to be hung inside the castle.
Oakham Castle Hall, dating from around 1190, is one of the finest surviving examples of secular medieval architecture in England; an ancient tradition requires every visiting peer to contribute a horseshoe to be displayed within its walls.
A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
