Metalworking site

What is recorded here

Situated on a gentle E-facing slope. Archaeological monitoring and excavation (07E0865) recovered evidence of metalworking in a small area (dims. c. 10m N-S; c. 7.5m E-W). This included two furnace-bottoms as hemispherical pits (diam. 0.9m; D 0.32m: diam. 1.53m; D 0.5m), both of which were fired twice, and were probably specialising in the production of bronze. The larger furnace produced a C 14 determination of 790 +- 18 BP (1219-1269 cal. 2 sigma). (Bolger 2009; 2010) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload 16 March, 2012
