Graveslab

What is recorded here

Kilroosk graveyard once held a graveslab carving Dobhar Chu, the animal named in local story. The stone vanished around 1918, leaving behind tales rather than a visible marker. What remains is a absence shaped like a creature, remembered through the people who believed it belonged to them.
There is a record of a stone with the carving of an animal called 'Dobhar Chu' (Tohall 1948, 127-9) in Kilroosk graveyard (LE007-018002-), which has many folk tales associated with it, but the stone has been missing since c. 1918.
