What is recorded here
Not indicated, 234 ft. OD is a circular earthwork on a Limerick pasture hill, near a ring-barrow and ringfort. O’Kelly wrote that a large limestone flag stood at its edge until a land-owner moved it for a gate post, exposing bones beneath. Local tradition calls the place a burial ground, while the field boundaries still cut across its ancient shape.
On a spot height (236ft/72m), in pasture, 205m SW of a townland boundary with Cloghnamanagh. Ring-barrow (LI031-033----) lies 175m to NE and ringfort (LI031-029----) lies 200m to NW. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork (39m NW-SE; 37m NE-SW) which is traversed across the NE edge by a field boundary running NW-SE and across the NW edge by a field boundary running NE-SW. Referred to by O’Kelly (1944, 49) as Earthwork Type A and described as: ‘An almost circular platform which has not got a fosse. It is considerably higher at the S side than at the N. On the E edge of the platform is a large limestone flag, which may have been standing erect at one time. A former land-owner decided to use it as a gate post and bored a small hole through the stone near one end. When the flag was moved bones were found below it and it was then decided to return it to its original position. Local tradition holds that it was a burial ground’. Monument is visible as a roughly circular-shaped tree-lined earthwork on OSi aerial orthoimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe aerial orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018.
