What is recorded here

Not indciated is a graveslab in Callan. It lies in St Mary’s church, not hidden or misnamed. The clear fact is that it is a grave marker, not an unspecified placeholder.

Lying prostrate towards the W end of the centre aisle of the nave of St Mary’s church (KK026-010012-), Callan. A straight-sided tapering slab (total L 1.86m; Wth 0.65m at top; Wth 0.44m at base; min. T 0.14m). It is decorated with a four-armed floriated cross (Wth 0.4m) with lozenge-shaped centre. The arms terminate with a simple fleur-de-lys terminal. The incised cross-shaft (Wth 0.03m) also terminates in a simple fleur-de-lys. A portion (L 0.65m; Wth 0.05m) has been cut from the lower dexter edge of the slab and there is also a small piece broken at the edge near the base on the sinister side. The slab is covered in lichen. There is no visible inscription. Stylistically this graveslab dates to the 13th/14th century. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 14 November 2019
