Norwood Castle: a motte and bailey castle 100m north of Dean Farm

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Norwood Castle is a substantial Norman motte and bailey castle located one hundred metres north of Dean Farm in Wiltshire. The raised mound would have supported a wooden or stone keep, whilst the outer bailey provided space for domestic and military functions during the eleventh or twelfth century. The earthwork still stands in relatively good condition, preserving the shape of that early medieval defensive structure.
The National Heritage List for England records Norwood Castle: a motte and bailey castle 100m north of Dean Farm as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Norwood Castle was built in the late 11th or early 12th century, likely by a Norman lord following the conquest of 1066, as part of the broader pattern of motte and bailey castle construction in England. It is remembered as an example of early medieval military architecture and is protected as a scheduled monument for its historical and archaeological significance.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
