This brushed metal commemorative plaque records: On this site stood the North-East gate of Roman Corinium where the Fosseway from Lincoln and Akeman Street from Verulamium (St. Albans) entered the town. Excavations in 1960 revealed a gate 30m wide, with flanking towers and a dual-carriage-way of cobbled streets. The River Churn was diverted to flow just outside the town wall.
The North-East gate of Roman Corinium marked the entrance of two major Roman roads into the settlement, indicating its significance as a hub for trade and military movement in Roman Britain; archaeological excavations have provided insights into the urban planning and engineering capabilities of Roman towns.
