Norman Oak

Petworth was a royal gift by Henry I's widow in 1150 to the Percy family (powerful landowners in the North). The oak tree has survived all landscape changes since & now has hollies growing from decomposing wood in its cavities.

The Norman Oak is believed to have stood since the 12th century, surviving landscape changes at Petworth, which was gifted by Henry I's widow to the Percy family in 1150. The tree is historically significant as a rare surviving feature linked to the medieval Percy estates and reflects long-standing land management practices in the region.
