Newton St Loe Castle began as a fortified manor for the de Paveley and St Loe families, probably in the 12th century, and later grew into a rectangular courtyard castle with four corner towers. A local story claims William de Sancto Laudo held King John under arrest inside St. John's keep, turning a private home into a temporary prison for a crown. The 14th-century keep and 15th-century gatehouse still stand beside landscaped gardens, while a nearby mound hints at one lost corner tower.
