Castle Street still drops past the ruined Newmilns Tower, a medieval tower house later forced into barracks and prison work during the seventeenth century. Soldiers may have marched through chambers first built for a local family, while prisoners sat in darkness beneath rooms that once watched the valley. The tower lost much of its shape, but it kept its function: to hold people, exclude them, and remain visible in East Ayrshire.
