Newcastle General Cemetery

Registered park or garden

What is recorded here

Newcastle General Cemetery opened in 1836 with John Dobson’s twin chapels and massive gate piers, capturing a city at the peak of its achievement. Dobson himself sleeps beneath the grass, surrounded by monuments that still display the bold skill of local craftsmen. The triangular ground remains a registered historic park where serpentine paths and straight walks preserve the shape of that confident era.
The National Heritage List for England records Newcastle General Cemetery as a registered park or garden at Grade II*. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
