Newcastle Emlyn Castle is a substantial stone ruin built for the princes of Deheubarth in the mid 13th century, later upgraded by the English Crown and finally demolished after the civil wars. It sits on a steep promontory bounded by the River Teifi, where Roger Mortimer once besieged Rhys ap Maredudd and royalists later raised an artillery bastion that failed to stop parliamentary capture. The gatehouse survives as the largest feature, its towers widened into mansion windows by Sir Rhys ap Thomas before the final siege, while the rest has surrendered to grass and memory.

Newcastle Emlyn Castle was built by the de Harcourt family in the 12th or 13th century and later held by the powerful Lord Rhys and his descendants of the House of Dinefwr. It is important as a key medieval stronghold in the struggle between Welsh princes and English lords in the Welsh Marches.
