New Slains Castle stands roofless on a high cliff above Port Erroll, its surviving tower base dating from 1598 when the ninth Earl of Errol rebuilt his home after James VI destroyed Collieston. Thomas Mawson once shaped gardens around the ruins, and local story claims the place inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. The empty chambers still face the sea, preserving the shape of a house that kept changing while the cliff kept taking it back.
