Nevern Castle stood on a sharp Pembrokeshire hill where Rhys ap Gruffydd rebuilt Welsh pride in stone before his own sons imprisoned him inside it. Hywel Sais destroyed the place in 1195 rather than let it fall to Anglo-Norman hands, erasing the home of alliances, betrayals and crusading absences. The castle vanished so completely that Newport later took its role, leaving behind only a hill, a valley and the memory of men who stopped believing walls could protect them.
